Hi,
I was adding some new capabilities to our snaps generator so now we
can also provide the pecl bundle and the installer for the windows
distribution. (details and links at http://edin.dk/archives/37-New-
Snapshot-Capabilities.html)
If you have any suggestions on how to represent these new downloads
on snaps.php.net and are not aesthetically challenged like I em,
please let me hear it :)

Hello,
I would like to suggest a redesign of the page. In my opinion the page
is too complex, so for example I find it a bit hard to match the
information for the next snapshots in the left of the page with the
snapshots itself on the right. I find it also complex that the source
and the win32 packages are separated and have its own creation
intervals. In case there is no special reason for that I would suggest
to distribute everything together.
I have uploaded a design I could imagine to
http://hp-film.pytalhost.de/test/php/snaps_draw.png.
By the way, I can't follow the link to the PHP installer because I get
the error message that the access to the file is "Forbidden".

The page is a bit confusing and I didn't want too much new stuff to it
without thinking about it first. Your suggestion is promising, but it
might be a bit too wide for people that have smaller screen resolutions.
I think we need to make it look good at 1024x768.
There are some things you have missed. There are two different source
bundles (gz and bz2). "Next" build depends on the system (source or
bins) and the PHP version (we build some windows snapshots more often
than others).
By the way, I can't follow the link to the PHP installer because I get
the error message that the access to the file is "Forbidden".
Thanks for the heads up. This should be fixed now.
Would you be willing to produce the HTML needed for the redesign?

Yes, it's very wide. So what about this: (Quick edit..)

How about something along these lines ...
(Not pretty as I'm crap at the design - sorry).
http://rquadling.php1h.com/snap.html
Use icons for the labels (BZ2, GZ, ZIP, PECL, INST, COMP, SNAP).
The logs for failed builds could also be included.

Hey! It wasn't THAT scary! Just a table which has the most recent
activity on the left side columns.
Not too wide.
Easy to see which version and the either source or Win32 stuff.
And also all the additional files requested.
I like the idea. My implementation though. Hmmm. Ok. I agree.

Yes, the page is too wide. The reason for this is that this is actually
not a website but a rearranged screenshot. I noticed too late that the
page has a bad width.

Maybe I missed the things because I was led from the dream that the
different build intervals could be simplified too. ;) But you are right
these are things I didn't pay attention to. I could make a new
suggestion tomorrow and try to integrate the missing things.
Thanks for the heads up. This should be fixed now.
This was a very fast fix and indeed I can now download the installer.

Unfortunately my knowledge about HTML and CSS is very limited, so I
don't think the page would look very good in case I did it. I would
prefer if somebody with more knowledge could do it.
I am currently working on my second draw for the page, but I have a
question. For my first draw I assumed that all of the new features will
be available for all three branches, but is this actually true?
By the way, I don't know whether you are aware that all build processes
of the win32 snapshots have failed for one day now.

Yes, it is quick, as it doesn't work good in IE6, which is the most
common browser (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp)
Might be a good alternative for the snaps site, as it is never too
larg :) But it should work on IE6 too of course.

Oops, well works in IE6.. just looks like hell.. I'd be interested in
seeing the % of the browsers on that specific site, it's not like any
common website thus can't rely on w3schools imho.
Anyways, you are right, looks like hell in IE6, try it in firefox or
opera .. the goal is to get an idea... not having a stable state with
everything working right away, etc...
So look with a decent browser (wink) and tell me f you like the idea
of the tabs, that's the main point I am looking to get feedbacks on.

Not that it matters how many users are using IE6, PHP should be
atleast IE6, IE7, FF, Mozilla, Safari and Netscape compatible. (maybe
more?)

Yeah, i tested it with Firefox, and it's a good idea. I don't like the
style of the button, i think it doesn't really fit into the website,
so maybe if you could change the buttons to a little bit more PHP-like
it is cool for me, but well, it's not my site :P

Instead of using all tat javascript and trying to "make it work" in all
possible browsers, why don't you simply make multiple pages, with static
links from page to page (ie. page1.html for the first button, page2.html
for the 2nd, etc.). And as for button appearances, just make it look
like the tabs in the PHP bug tracker and it'll all be fine IMO.

Yes we have discussed that on IRC with edin and the whole idea was
USING tabs. So here I'll state exactly the idea as it seems to
misunderstood:
The idea is clearly and simply to use tabs for the different branches.
Using javascript was just simple and fast in this case and yes we
should handle the tabs statically.
The only reason why we are making it work in javascript is not
because I want it to be in javascript, but more because I wanted to
have tabs working quickly and easy which is why I did in javascript
without the need of PHP.
I hereby say that yes, we will be using tabs as it is much easier to
code and it will work on more browsers (I am thinking of links/lynx)
for instance.

Using tabs is also a good idea, especially because you avoid space
problems by that.
My second draw would look like this:
http://hp-film.pytalhost.de/test/php/snaps_draw2.png
Because I am currently short of time I didn't include the new features
for the 5.2.x branch this time but I hope you see how I mean it...
I think it would be better to write the date for the next snapshot next
to the snapshot itself (like I have done it in my draw) and not to write
it in a list on the left of the page. I have some difficulties with
finding out to which snapshots on the right the dates on the left belong.

Oh that looks ugly with nocss extension.. also looks bad in
lynx/links.. oh yeah, also looks ugly in netscape navigator 1.0B1...
but hey.. isn't that 21st century ? so looks good in firefox css/js
enabled :)
Seriously, what have I misexplained up there ? Was I not clear that
the idea was simply to show that we could use tabs IN GENERAL to make
the browsing of snaps easier ? We don't need to use javascript, we
don't have to use that exact case, the only reason for using it was
that it was fast for most people to see what tabs browsing could look
like.
Here is an optimized version for early browsers:
http://dev.agoraproduction.com/php/snaps/snaps2.php
Of course this is a joke..
But again to make sure no one misinterprets this, the idea of the tabs
using javascript was SIMPLY to show everyone (using firefox of course)
that we could make the use of tabs within the snaps site. And NO we do
not have to use javascript, and yes we will mostly be using the ?v=44
?v52 ?v6dev (Note that those names are not relevant, we can use
whatever the person that implements it want..) using static tabs.
Clear ?
