Hi,
Given the on going discussions especially about Closures it seems
pointless to move towards beta1 this week. Therefore we are delaying
beta1 to Feb. 29th. This means we will be freezing for non build/
critical fixes next Monday. Packaging will be the following Wednesday.
In order to make this date, its imperative that the involved parties
find a compromise by this Thursday and publish a summary on this day
as well. The patch should follow ASAP, obviously no later than Monday
next week. So please folks think in terms of getting 5.3 out the door
and if necessary features should be moved out of 5.3 and worked on in
HEAD.
I am also waiting on some word on the upgrading guide, Steph??? Maybe
someone else can step up to help out here. Nathan should hopefully
finally get the php.ini proposal to us. All other important issues
seem to be under control and a few others have a few days to get in or
not .. so it goes.
regards,
Johannes and Lukas

Sure? Next 29th Feb looks more practical ;)

Hey,
Just FYI .. today is the last day for feature changes ahead of 5.3.0
beta1. The big change I am waiting on for today is the removal of the
OO specific features in closures. Tomorrow will be dedicated to build
only fixes, Johannes/Pierre will then handle the packaging some time
on Wednesday. They will notify the list once that is done and
development may continue then.
Note however that we are then in beta state, which is more or less
feature freeze time aka bug fixing only. Johannes and I reserve the
right to start some finger slapping if people throw in features
without previous nods from us. So bug fixing only please! Then we can
hopefully follow up with beta2 or better yet already with RC1 in a
reasonable amount of time.
regards,
Lukas

What do you mean by "removal of OO specific features"? I thought we
agreed on having closures just as they are now. Did anything change? Why?

Sorry for not communicating this earlier. Johannes and I are just
worried that discussions over the OO aspects in closures will continue
to slow down the 5.3 release process. In an effort to keep the focus
on releasing all the features we do feel 100% comfortable with we have
asked Christian to do this change. He agreed to this, even though he
of course would rather have kept the OO features in, but he was none
the less willing to do this for the greater good (as defined by the
RMs). So in other words if you feel this is bad, blame the RMs .. but
the decision still stands (I hope we RMs have enough credit to make
such a decision).
