Hello guys,
PHP has been chosen as a summer of code project. I suggets we put the
following on php.net. Any comments?
The PHP team is proud to once again participate in the Google Summer of Code.
We are still looking for project ideas of interested students. In case you
want to spend your summer with your favorite open source project, PHP, and get
some money for adding an interesting project to it, you should contact us at
internals@php.net. The deadline for submitting ideas is the 24th of March 2007.
The current list of ideas can be seen here http://php.net/ideas. If you have
not heard of the Google Summer of Code, then have a look here
http://code.google.com/soc.
Best regards,
Marcus

Do you guys think that would qualify as php project as well?

After allowing PHPUnit ideas I can't see any problems with adding
xdebug ideas too.
xdebug even exists in pecl so technically it is under php.net, right? :)

Hello Derick,
We are in the collection phase right now. We can always decline projects
or prioritize project close to core PHP during the dicsussion phase anyway.

Right.
Allowing attachments (.diff, blocking .php as reproduce cases
shouldn't be more than 20lines anyway), tracking CVS commits,
status/category/assignment history...
And a little look&feel update wouldn't hurt either...

Ca we have a project designed to improve code coverage of PHP by
creating .phpt tests? I may not seem like a complex project, but in
terms of improving PHP as a language it would be exceptionally
useful. Probably more so then any one extension that can come out of
GSoC.

Hi,
I read a lot of text, just for information and i like the idea of
GSoC. There are some interesting things on the PHP Ideas list, and it
looks like this idea is the simplest one. As the phpt file structure
is quite easy and there's (AFAIK) no knowledge of C/C++ needed. Only a
little bit PHP programming, and writing the expected result :)
But i have also some ideas, but i have no idea if it is possible or
useful in PHP. For example i'd like to see support for handling
audio/video files in PHP, to do all kind of music processing in PHP,
or create music streams directly from within a website. I haven't seen
this on any other web based programming language yet.
Kind Regards,
Tijnema
ps. Yes i know the oggvorbis PECL package, but this is only for OGG.

Hello Tijnema,
we have a few PECL extensions that deal with audio stuff. So it is
possible but that definitively requires a lot of C skills. Apply for
any of the ideas as a student on the GSoC page if you like.

Hi Marcus,
I'm not sure about which PECL extensions you are talking, i can only
find one for OGGvorbis support.
I have quite a lot C skills, i think it's not a real big problem to
write it (at least for me). But as you know it is impossible to write
such thing in my own (or work for a year or more on it). And well the
question is, will it be useful? It's nice if it's built into PHP then,
but what if there's no interest for it?
Of course i want to apply for an idea, but just don't know which to choose :)

MySQL has exactly the same project (including more QA related ones).
I will add it to ideas.php.

Hey,
If I had more C/C++ expertise than I currently have, I'd like to apply for it.
The worst part of a good project is its conception. As long as you
have an idea and publish it waiting for other's help, it's enough.
Try putting all your ideas online and you'll see that are more people
interested to help PHP to get better than you even imagine.
Sorry, I decided to not take part of this discussion, but Marcus said
a wrong thing and I have to put my opinions. =)
Cheers,

Another QA-related project idea: a rewrite of run-tests.php. Marcus and
I discussed this a while ago when I brainstormed on a rewrite of
bench.php.

Hey Ilia
This is a fantastic idea! And as for not being complex - actually I
think it is quite a challenge. I (and a couple of colleagues) have spent
a bit of time over the past two months trying to work out how best to do
this, you need to get a pretty good idea of how PHP works in order to
be able to write the tests. This might not seem to hard to you who are
already so familiar with the internals but - for a student that wanted
to get a good understanding of how PHP works - this would be a great
project. And of course - gaining this kind of understanding in PHP means
that you get to understand general principles that apply to other languages.
