Can we remove "NEWS" tag ?

Hi,

I've been doing some editing to the NEWS files, and keep getting this
problem

$ git diff NEWS
fatal: ambiguous argument 'NEWS': both revision and filename
Use '--' to separate filenames from revisions

Although I can do as it suggests, I would prefer to remove the NEWS tag we
have since 2008 as part of the move from CVS to SVN.

Any objections ?

While I don't think anyone would actually be using that in the near
future, can't you just rename it to NEWS-2008 or something? (Or manually
retagging and then deleting if nothing else.)

• no historically important data is lost (just kidding)
• problem solved

Just because I've seen people argue in favor of keeping historical
branches and stuff, and while I don't see a lot of value, it might be
needed at some point.

I swear this has come up before. Please, remove or rename it, I don't see anyone objecting.
