Does anyone have a problem with me committing the T1Lib/GD patch for
error reporting?

Like Sterling already told you, I committed it to HEAD last night.
But you forgot to mention that it requires T1lib 5.0.0..
I changed the t1lib check so that it checks for this T1_StrError()
function instead.
