You may have noticed we had some downtime on svn.php.net today. It
started around 16:30 Pacific time and we finally got the box back up at
around 23:35.
It turned out that the onboard RAID controller had gone bad which wasn't
completely obvious initially. Sitting there staring at an fsck and
wondering why it was taking so long.
Thanks to Sean Bruno along with Peter and Scott at Yahoo for figuring it
out and then moving the drives to a new chassis and getting us back up.
We still have new hardware coming in the next week or two for both svn
and www (y1 and y2) and we will be migrating off these boxes that have
served us well since 2005. I think this is the first hardware problem we
have had with them.

Same disks for 6 years?
I've just had another warantee repair drive back in here seems like newer drives
you can't even expect 3 years without a problem :( Yet I've got some 10Gb drives
that have been running since the 90's.

No but I recognise the customer ... The server sits in the bottom of a cupboard
behind the counter area ;) The disk always gets changed at the three year
service though ( if it lasts that long these days :( ), and the data is backed
up to other machines on the network.
I've a lot of boxes that simply display a sequence of pictures. PHP system
creates the list of static pictures and text pages with live data on. They just
plod on year after year and many still have CRT monitors attached! Perhaps when
the monitors finally dies they will cough up for a new display controller as
well :) and the replacements will just have SSD's - no moving parts - so we
might get another 20 years?
