signed/unsigned mismatch
It appears that VC doesn't like the comparison:
lval < LONG_MAX - offset
because offset is unsigned, it turns LONG_MAX-offset to unsigned as well,
and ends up comparing an signed with unsigned. Maybe we should explicitly
cast LONG_MAX-offset to long?
