and release these versions. We'll package them today and announce them

You mean you're gonna release RC1's as the releases and not current
CVS ???? There were several fixes committed after RC1 that need to
be in release too..

No, we'll release the latest CVS in the respective branches...

I went over all of the differences between RC1 and the branch's HEAD, and
it appears that there were some substantial fixes with some potential for
breakage that I didn't remember (some of them ran by me, go figure).
Therefore I think it's best if we released RC2 instead, and released the
final version next week. From this point onwards, please run patches by
me/Ilia, only major bug fixes should go in and trigger RC3.
