I hope I'm doing something wrong, I'm issuing this:

cvs -dP update
make clean
./configure --with-zlib --and-other-options
make cli

My result when linking occurs:

ext/zlib/zlib.lo: In function zm_startup_zlib': /usr/home/curt/cvs/php/php-src/ext/zlib/zlib.c:212: undefined reference tophp_zlib_filter_factory'
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/home/curt/cvs/php/php-src.

Better choice: Use the snapshots..
