To be fair, it wouldn't have taken a psychic to predict that this would 
be at least discussed. Until now, there has never actually been a major 
version since the release process RFC passed, and it's not at all 
unreasonable to guess a special case might apply.

Even if there's consensus that no extension is required, I think an RFC 
formally asserting that would be the only way to stop speculation.
