hm, weird, created it via gunzip -c ing the tgz, so it should be a tar file=
:
root@pecl:~# file /var/lib/pear/memcached-2.2.0.tar
/var/lib/pear/memcached-2.2.0.tar: POSIX tar archive (GNU)
