I agree. It might sound silly, but it would also be interesting to know what could be the effect of phpng on the potential ideas for php6/7 from https://wiki.php.net/ideas/php6 (if any). For most of them it's pretty clear that there's isn't an overlap, but how about unicode support? Its implementation might undo or reduce some of the performance gains obtained in phpng. Or, if you put it the other way around: if we merge phpng to master it might not be acceptable to think about adding utf8 support.
