On Debian, `sudo apt-get insta= ll libapache2-mod-php5` is all you need to do to get PHP functioning on Apache, with no configuration required whatsoever. It may not be the best way to use PHP, but it=E2=80=99s certainly the simplest for new users. Again, this is just history/habits.
