Being in core is not a sign of good maintenance. There are so many poorly maintained part in core as well. Also some exts are simply not used anymore or do not have active developers, nothing we can do will change that. If you use some of them, then try to contribute and take the hand over them (you being anyone reading this mail, not you alone:).
