I'm not sure how long you've been on internals, but I'm not sure there's any precedence to such strong and diverse opposition to a feature - amongst both core developers, original authors and the community at large. At least I can't remember one in the last 13 years (it's been a long time though, maybe I forgot). It's completely independent from any other idea we might have in mind.
