As far as I can tell, it's effectively impossible for anyone who wants to support "low" PHP 5 versions. That's because the b"" prefix wasn't introduced until PHP 5.2.1, and that prefix is *crucial* to future-proofing any code that deals with binary data. -- Edward Z.
