The existing functions *are* explicit=2E They have *always* had the semant=
ics of "try to extract an integer from this value"=2E They are not "problem=
atic", they are a perfectly reasonable feature for the language to include=
=2E

The *new* functionality needed is "validate that this value is int-like, a=
nd only give me an integer if it is"=2E

I don't think we should repurpose widely-used syntax for a different use c=
ase=2E If we want new functionality, with new semantics, we should add new =
syntax for that=2E
