There was a similar brouhaha a year or two back in the folk dancing world. Some display dance groups paint their faces black as many of the dances were done like that a century or so ago. There were cries about this offending people with dark skins. In fact the origin was where some would dance around their village, drink a lot, cause mischief - the purpose of blacking up was to make it harder for them to be recognised. Walking back (to shower off) after doing this I walked past a black family; they looked curious, I explained, smiles all round.
